The class of 2012 in Illinois is not as highly regarded as either the loaded 2011 class or the class of 2013 which features three elite prospects at the top, but ironically enough it has begun to produce a number of early verbal commitments.  The latest 2012 prospect to pull the trigger is 6'2 shooting guard Cameron Harvey from St. Joseph High School in Westchester, IL, who has committed to the University Of Wyoming.  In addition to the Cowboys, Harvey had also received interest from Marquette, Baylor and several others.

Harvey offered up his commitment while on an unofficial visit to the Laramie campus this past weekend.  He was won over by the fact that in addition to being a perfect fit from a basketball standpoint, Wyoming also has everything that Harvey is looking for academically, as he plans to major in engineering.  In addition, Cowboys head coach Heath Schroyer began recruiting Harvey while he was in eighth grade and was the first to offer him a scholarship.  And finally, Harvey knows that there will be an opportunity for immediate playing time at Wyoming once he arrives.

Harvey has already been highly acclaimed by many as one of the top prospects in Illinois from the 2012 class despite the fact that he has never played a varsity game at St. Joseph and will also have to earn his minutes this season, as he is part of a stacked back court which includes two other D1 prospects from the class of 2010 in 6'1 DeAndre McCamey and 6'0 Wayne Simon, both of whom remain uncommitted at this time.

Harvey's forte is his ability to shoot the basketball.  He has range that extends beyond the 3-point line and has proven that he can consistently drill shots with accuracy.  He is also capable of slashing to the basket and is adept at the defensive end.  The fact that Harvey also has a good combination of size and strength also make him an attractive 2-guard prospect at the next level.

Both Schroyer and assistant coach Shaun Vandiver have always had strong Chicago area recruiting connections and deserve kudos for being able to land an early commitment from Harvey.  In fact, Vandiver is an Illinois high school basketball alum, having played at Romeoville High School in Romeoville, IL.

Harvey becomes the second player from the class of 2012 in Illinois in the last week to make an early commitment, as last weekend 6'8 power forward Jay Simpson from Central High School in Champaign, IL announced for Purdue University.
