Anyone who watched the Illinois Kings traveling team compete this past spring and summer knows that the squad was stacked with several ideal small college prospects. It is therefore no surprise that a number of D2 programs are reaping the rewards when it comes to recruiting players from the Kings.
The latest school that falls into this category is Rollins College in Winter Park, FL which has landed a commitment from 6'8 power forward Jeff Dirkin from Oak Park-River Forest High School in Oak Park, IL. Dirkin's commitment was confirmed by Greg Ktistou, the head coach of the Kings.
Dirkin enjoyed an outstanding visit to Rollins two weeks ago and knew right then and there that the Tars were a great fit for him. In addition to being solid on the hardwood, Dirkin is also a top-of-the line student. He is interested in majoring in business and Rollins has one of the top business schools in the country. Not only that, but Rollins head coach Tom Klusman and his coaching staff followed Dirkin throughout the July evaluation period while at the 17-Under Super Showcase and the 17-Under National AAU Tournament in Orlando and let him know that he was a priority all along.
Dirkin is capable of playing either the 3 or the 4 spots and is especially adept at being able to face up and knock down shots from beyond the 3-point arc. He also has above-average athleticism and his offensive versatility makes him a perfect fit at the D2 level.
With Dirkin in the fold, he becomes the third player from the Kings to earn a full scholarship, joining 6'1 point guard Sean McGonagill from Riverside-Brookfield High School in Riverside, IL, who committed to Brown and 6'5 forward Kareem Amedu from Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, IL, who is headed to St. Michael's, a D2 school located in Colchester, Vermont. Dirkin plays on a high school team at Oak Park that will be one of the preseason favorites in the West Suburban Silver conference this upcoming season.
